My brother once told me that whenever he meets a new person at a party, he asks them immediately, “What are you really passionate about? What makes life worth living for you?” He wants to skip the small talk and get right to what makes that person special.
I asked him, “Don't a lot of people find that really intense and personal?” He said that they do, and they often dodge the question and walk away. He said, “That's okay. I'm not likely to become friends with that kind of person anyway.”
The question itself isn't that strange, but asking it within seconds of meeting a person is unusual and effective.
