I had a four-year-old foster child who would not go to bed at night, and would not stay in bed. He did everything he could not to sleep.

Eventually he told me that his mother, who had died, had “Gone to sleep.”

I believe that it’s always best to tell the age-appropriate truth to children, because such euphemisms can fester into anything without us realising.
