It’s not how you compensate your executives, it’s which executives you have to compensate in the first place. If you have the right executives on the bus, they will do everything within their power to build a great company, not because of what  they will  “get” for it, but because they simply cannot imagine settling for anything less. Their  moral code requires building excellence for its own sake, and you’re no more likely to change that with a compensation package than you’re likely to affect whether they breathe. The good-to-great companies understood a simple truth: The right people will do the right things and deliver the best results they’re capable of, regardless of the incentive system.

排在第一位的不是你支付报酬的多少,而是你将支付给何人。如果你有合适的雇员在车上,在他们力所能及的范围内,他们会为创建一个伟大的公司而竭尽全力,不是因为这样做会有什么好处,而是因为他们根本无法想像除此之外他们还能做什么。他们的本能要求他们能够建功立业,成就一番事业。他们不会因为报酬问题而向你折腰,就正如他们的呼吸不受你控制一样。实现跨越的公司明白这样一个简单的道理,合适的雇员不会计较报酬的多少,只要认定是对的,他们就会全力以赴。
